First Snow of 2009

Today Slinger, Wisconsin got dumped with 10-15 inches of snow. Mike was off and I was supposed to go into work today, but the patient load was down to 3, so to trek into work for that was silly, since there were 2 nurses at the clinic already. So... WE WENT SLEDDING!!! We first went to Fireman's Park in Slinger. However, after Mike got hit in the back while holding Phoenix, by careless teenagers, we went to the more mild sledding hill in Hartford. We had fun going down 4 times, ha, ha. Phoenix really enjoyed sledding and it was fun to hear his little giggle. We'll have to go again soon, but for now.... the warmth is great!

2009 Blackburn Family Trip to Oklahoma

This past week, our little family began our first vacation, by ourselves, in our Mazda 5. On our journey, we traveled to Oklahoma and made our way through Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, and back home to Wisconsin. Originally, we were going to go to Los Angeles, California for Mike's 10 year high school reunion, but finances did not allow this to happen. So, we decided to shorten our long awaited vacation and visit Mikes family as well as see the many different landscapes of our beloved United States. Family and friends... follow along as I take you through just a brief summary of our memorable and enjoyable vacation!

How Was Phoenix Traveling?

Of note...

Phoenix was fantastic while traveling 2400 miles! He did not cry or get fussy at all during our many hours in the car. For this, Phoenix gets a ribbon on our site for being our #1 traveler!

Geronimo's grave site is located on Fort Sill Military Base. Mike's sister's fiance, T.J., is currently serving at Fort Sill and we were able to go on the grounds to the Indian cemetery and pay reverence to many Native Americans and their ancestors.

This is a picture of a Redneck Homestead we passed on our travels.... had to stop and take a picture!

We were going to take a picture of Elvis's estate. It was blocked by trees and we were not about to pay 10 dollars to park. Therefore, this is what we ended up with... better than nothing!

Sleepy Hollow

On Friday, Phoenix and I went to Illinois to see Madison and Cadmium perform in Sleepy Hollow at the Egyptian Theater in DeKalb. In addition to the two actors, we went to also support Cumorah as a stage hand and Brad who created a realistic log for the forest scene as well as the much anticipated horse head that was accompanied by the headless horseman with working red lights as eyes and smoke coming out of it's nostrils. It was great! Prior to the seeing the play, we were able to spend some quality time with the family in the morning. It was wonderful to just relax and catch up a little. Thank you Brad, Tiffany, Madison, Cadmium, Cumorah, and Miles for a great weekend of family time! Phoenix and I will have to come down again sometime.

Miracle Brush???

It has been a long time since I have blogged and a lot has happened with our little Phoenix. What a lot of family and friends may not know is that Phoenix has had a hard time doing those normal 21 month old things such as pointing, clapping, talking, using utensils, imitating, etc. Because of this, we had an assessment done by the occupational therapist from the birth to three program on Aug 28th. After asking many questions and observing Phoenix, the occupational therapist came to the conclusion that he has a mild sensory-processing disorder.

On September 4th, a much anticipated visit with Children's Hospital's Dr. Bear came. We were there for 2 hours, which consisted of a lot of waiting and meeting with the physical therapist, occupational therapist, and speech therapist. After they evaluated and tested a very tired Phoenix in about 20 minutes, they concluded that Phoenix was at a 10-month level for expressing himself and a 16-month level of understanding. I know that the team of therapists are trained and have research to base their explanation, but somehow I feel they were off in their calculations, at least just a little.

The occupational therapist came to our home on Sept 9th where our 45 minute visit was spent observing how to "brush" Phoenix. Brushing??? What the heck is that you might ask yourself? Well, there is what looks like a surgical brush that is used, with firm pressure, on the arms, legs, and back along with joint compressions. Based on the theory of Sensory Integration, the brushing technique uses a specific method of stimulation to help the brain organize sensory information. Our skin is our largest sensory organ, followed closely by our muscles and skeleton, connected by our nervous system and governed by our brain. The sensory systems feed information from our environment, through sense receptors, and neural impulses via our nervous system, directly to the brain. The brain then organizes it, sends it back through the nervous system for use as understanding, adaptation, learning, and skill development.

After using the brush for a few days faithfully (3-6 times a day), Sunday Sept 13th came... It was filled with Phoenix talking! During the next week and a half, Phoenix is being more like a real boy, maybe not to the exact level of a 21 month old, but making great leaps toward understanding and expressing himself. He is making sounds back and forth to us, saying his N's, B's, M's and D's, babbling while he is reading his book (as though he is reading), clapping when asked, walking backwards, etc.

Is this a miracle brush? Did Phoenix just flip a switch in his brain that has put him on a path of development? Whatever it may be, we are so happy to have him progressing! We are having so much fun watching him discover new things and expressing himself during his daily activities. I am so thankful for my "little man." He has truly blessed our family and we are very thankful for the love that we are able to give him every day in the effort to help him be all that he can be!

The Wonder Pets Flyboat

PHOENIX LOVES THE WONDER PETS ON NOGGIN!
So, when Mike was at Toys "R" Us yesterday and saw a Wonder Pets Flyboat on clearance he had to get it! This morning when Phoenix got up and saw the flyboat he was so excited, crawled in, and started playing with the balls. Oh what fun! The only down side was that there are only 25 balls, but that is 25 balls we have to pick up, so I think that is plenty. Onto another adventure!

Milwaukee Airshow

We have been having so much fun this summer thinking of things to do on Saturdays that don't require a lot of money. This weekend, going to the Milwaukee Airshow was on the agenda thanks to Mike. At first I wasn't so sure we would have a good time, but we loved it and Phoenix loved the planes as well and would follow them wherever they went in the sky. We were able to see the United States Airforce Thunderbirds, the United States Army Golden Knight Parachute jumper, and other planes from times past. Now.... what to do next weekend....
